Moirans-en-Montagne
The land of children
Jura Sud, which since the 19th century has specialised in wood turning and more particularly in the manufacture of toys, is a land, like its mascot Ludy, which brings together a wealth of tourist attractions and know-how.
The natural frontier between the Upper Jura and the Lake District, and an integral part of the Upper Jura Regional Nature Park, Jura Sud was born of the desire of 17 towns and villages to bring their diverse talents together and assert the identity of a country.
From 1850, the region as a whole turned to wood turning as its speciality, producing a huge variety of different objects: both toys and more practical items.
Today, Jura Sud is responsible for 50% of the French toy production, with in particular a number of famous companies such as Smoby, the Berchet group, Vilac and L'Arbre à Jouer. The smaller craft companies will share their passion with you so that wood turning ceases to have any secrets for you...
Jura Sud is also marked by the Vouglans Dam, a fantastic project which is part of the 3rd largest dam in France in terms of water capacity, an immense historical and religious heritage with the wooden church of Lavancia, made of 16 different species of wood, like no other building in France.
A number of authentic rural buildings and traditional housing: the bread ovens of Montcusel, the fountains of Les Crozets and the typical farms of Upper Jura are all testimony to these cultural riches.
