The City of Princes

chateau-de-montbeliardMontbéliard, born of the marriage between an heiress from Comté and a young prince of the empire, has preserved the charm that is so unique to the lovely cities of the Württemberg Empire. Stone-built market places, 17th century Protestant church, Renaissance townhouses and small houses in bright colours, lavender, lilac, ox blood or tender pink... the former glories of this Imperial Principality are not easily forgotten.

The castle which dominates the city is home to some of the finest reminders of this past: a natural history gallery, in homage to Cuvier, who was born here in Montbéliard, Gallo-Roman archaeology exhibits and more beside.

Further down, opposite the oldest Protestant church in France (St Martin's, built in 1601), the Hôtel Beurnier-Rossel has all the atmosphere of the Bourgeois salons of the 18th century. It is now home to the Museum of Art and History, whose collection of Montbéliard dressers, liturgical pewter, pearl-incrusted hairpieces and music boxes is ample testimony to the city's dual heritage, German and Protestant.

marche-de-noelChristmas Lights market

During the whole Advent period, the town of Montbéliard is metamorphosed.

The town organises one of the finest Christmas markets : the Christmas Lights. Nestled at the foot of St Martin's temple, more than 130 craftspeople, installed in rustic cabins, show off their wares : Christmas decorations, nativity figures, toys, delilcacies, mulled wine, gingerbread, fois gras, etc.

Street parades animate the Christmas market : acrobats, clowns, fanfares, Saint-Nicolas... The family atmosphere and the traditional nature make this a truly wonderful event.
