Dole
The capital of the Ancient Earldom, holiday in France
Dole, the City of Marcel Aymé and Pasteur, will take you back to the time of the ancient Earldom, whose capital it was.
Every road or monument here reminds us of the daily existence of the nobles, monks, craftsmen and traders who made the ancient capital so prosperous.
Marcel Aymé took inspiration from the fabric of the town for some of his finest novels (The Sorceress, The Mill on the Sourdine...). As for Pasteur, he has left his trace in a number of places in this picturesque town.
Dole has been listed as a City of Art and History, and is best discovered by ambling down its pedestrian streets, around the old tanners' quarter and the Hôtel Dieu (now a media library) Don't miss the area around the collegiate church of Notre Dame where, three times a week, the market comes to display the very best in Franche-Comté flavours.
