Bicycle tourism, a democratic pastime with variable geometry

eurovelo6-doleThere are those who follow the roads in search of strong experiences. They are generally kitted out with camping gear to feel independent, free and closer to nature. There are enthusiasts who leave in groups, or with their family to teach their children the art of travelling, along with certain values: respect of nature, fauna, knowledge of nature's riches. >> More on the  Euro Velo Route

Immortalise this experience in a travel diary.

Many like to record each day's adventure in a few descriptive lines. The experience really does leave an impression. They make careful notes about the distances covered, the regional plates they have tasted. Naturally they illustrate it well with photos. It is a way of continuing the journey.

Preparing your bicycle trip

cyclotourismeA few bits of common sense advice can also come in handy to help you on your way with some peace of mind :

# Type of bicycle : practically any type of bicycle (mountain bike, roadster bicycle...) can be used for your trip on condition that it is solidly built. The quality of the most important parts (frame, derailleur...) has a direct influence on the buying price.
# Tyres : half-racing tyres, or hybrid, are a good compromise for asphalt. They have less punctures and slow you down less than mountain bike tyres.
# Luggage rack : buy tough ones!
# Saddlebags : behind, in front, on the handlebars. It is an expensive element (over €100 for a good pair). Whatever you do, don’t pedal with a backpack on your back: you will be sure to suffer over the long haul.
# Repair kit : indispensable. At the very least, it should include a tyre lever, patches and inner tubes, bicycle oil, a rag and a pump...
# Stop thief : to sleep peacefully at night, attach your bicycle well and take your saddle bags with you.
# Small rucksack : useful for going walking from time to time.
# Tent : a model for 2/3 persons weighs around 3kg and can be bought for a modest outlay.
# Cooker : small gas cookers take up little room and are cheap.
# Gloves – cycling shorts : avoid chafing and irritation

A careful cyclist stays in one piece

Easy does it going downhill - You should call a halt at night because that's when bicycle tourists have most accidents – you are strongly advised to wear a helmet -
Don't pedal all day : in "bicycle tourism", don't forget the tourism part! Take the time to stretch your legs, even if it means shortening your journey.
