Les Petites Cités Comtoises de Caractère
"Les petites Cités Comtoises de Caractère" is a group of 28 small towns in Franche-Comté that are full of character and characteristic of Franche-Comté, and all located in rural areas boasting exceptional cultural and tourist heritage.
Four of them rank among the "Loveliest villages in France": Lods, Pesmes, Baume-les-Messieurs and Château-Chalon. Some of them have produced illustrious representatives of French genius such as Louis Pasteur, Victor Hugo, Louis Pergaud, the Lumière brothers and Gustave Courbet...
At some point in their lives, these men were able to exploit the independent and stubborn nature that is characteristic of the region's locals, to impose their ideas, their creations or conception of the world.
Both Arbois and Dole have museums that relate the life and work of Pasteur and in Ornans, the Courbet museum invites you to follow the career and works of this exceptional artist.
