Après avoir traversé le petit lac de Chaillexon, le Doubs s'élargit pour former les bassins du Doubs : retenue naturelle de 3500 m de lng, environ 100 m de large et de 30 à 40 m de profondeur, bordée de hauts rochers calcaires aux parois parfois étranges.
