The southern Vosges, a cultural economic and tourist intersection with the internationally classified site of the Ballon d'Alsace, are situated at the meeting point of three colourful and very different regions : Franche-Comté, Alsace and Lorraine. This mountain area of medium altitude is a land of many attractions and sharp contrasts: rounded summits (ballons) and rocky inclines alternating with lush meadows and stretches of water are all found within the confines of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.
The region's most extraordinary natural site is without doubt the Plateau des Mille Etangs (Plateau of a Thousand Ponds).
The still waters of these ponds, carved by glaciers, and rife with crayfish, salmonids, etc. lend a mysterious and romantic air to the Plateau where peat bogs, boreal flora and moorlands with birch trees, gores and juniper combine to create a unique landscape. Belfort, "City of the Lion" and town of Art and History, shows a wealth of façades harmoniously painted in pastel shades. Between Ronchamp and Mandeure connoisseurs of architecture will delight in the futurist lines of the Chapel designed by Le Corbusier and the remains of a Gallo-Roman theatre The Japy (watch making) and Peugeot museums pay eloquent tribute to the ingenuity of the local inhabitants and will satisfy the most demanding of enthusiasts.
