The Lakes

chalainChalain

231 ha, 2.9 km long, 1 km wide. The largest natural lake in Jura and also one of the most impressive. In 1904, a 10-metre drop in the water level, following a particularly long period of drought, revealed the remains of dwelling houses built on stilts dating from the Late Neolithic period. Archaeological digs revealed the presence of a lakeside civilisation which had left behind numerous remains such as tools made from stone or stag antlers.

belvedere-4-lacsThe Quatre Lacs

It is from the Quatre Lacs viewpoint that you will have the most beautiful view over this listed site, dominated by the Pic de l'Aigle and situated at the true heart of the Region of Lakes. Narlay Lake is the deepest of them at 48 m. A path leads walkers around the triangular shaped lake.

Ilay is also known as the Lake of La Motte because it has a small island in the middle. Archaeological excavations of the site revealed that this island was already occupied in Neolithic times. You may enjoy a large choice of activities around this listed site: fishing, walking or mountain biking, excursions around the lakes, picnic areas. The Route des Lacs is a 150 km long route around the lakes of Jura which also takes in the main centres of interest in the region.

It is the 3rd largest artificial lake in France. At the southernmost end you will be impressed by its 130-metre high dam. Vouglans Lake is situated on the first Jura plateau between Orgelet and Moirans en Montagne. The lake is divided into three zones:

>> Zone A, specially reserved for fishing.
>> Zone B, reserved for high-speed water sports, jet skiing, water skiing, etc.
>> Zone C, specially reserved for sailing, canoeing, rowing, etc. The lake has three large  beaches which are supervised: the beaches of Mercantine, Bellecin and Surchauffant.

lac-de-bonlieuBonlieu

Almost completely surrounded by forest, dominated by steep rocky cliffs, Bonlieu Lake is ideal for boat excursions or walks along its shores in the shade of the beech and fir trees. Its quiet and serene atmosphere is also perfect for fishing.

On its northern shore, lie the remains of Bonlieu Charterhouse, founded in 1170. On the southern side, a forest road leads to La Ronde viewpoint, from which there is a beautiful view over the Pic de l'Aigle, Ilay and Maclu lakes and, in the distance, Mont Rivel. Not to mention the beautiful view over Bonlieu lake itself.
